4 Easy Tips To Save Your Hair & Help It Grow
’Bad hair, don’t care’ said no woman, ever. So what happens when your crowning glory isn’t living up to her potential? Well, whether you’re dealing with sub-par shine, brittle strands, split ends or, shock horror, a thinning mane, we’ve got your back.
Here are four golden nuggets from our haircare arsenal that – and here’s the clincher – you’ll actually do. Because while we’ve heard them all (and we mean ALL), we’re betting you won’t be rushing to slap sunscreen on your scalp (yes, they say it’ll reduce hair loss but, er, have they never heard of oily hair?) or spritzing the contents of a test tube on your head (because, we like things natural and real around here, and we’re betting you do too, gorgeous). So, in the name of good hair days aplenty, read on.
- Wash smarter
Many shampoos contain sulphates which is the ingredient that makes your shampoo bubble and lather - put technically they are a surfactant (which is a term for various detergents, emulsifiers, and foaming agents). They can leave your scalp and hair super-dry, brittle – so much so, they can cause redness, irritation and have been linked to hair loss.
Invest in a good sulphate free shampoo and your hair will see better days. Try the BondiBoost range of products here - they're all sulphate free and we removed any parabens so you never have to worry about those nasties either.
- Wear a hat
We're said this before, but we'll say it again, always wear a hat! You know how regular heat styling is a big no-no for optimal hair health? Well, so is too much sun exposure – the reason being, UV damage can harm your hair cuticles just like it can the skin on your lovely mug. Signs of sun damage include dryness, frizz, split ends or breakage and thinning. So if you can’t yet part with your curling irons, baby steps – pop a hat on and know you’re doing some serious good by your locks. Easy peasy, right? (And yes, we fully give you permission to go hat shopping now, for your hair’s sake.) Just make sure it’s not too tight, as this could undo all your hard work (see tip #4).
- Get a massage
Yep, told you you’d want to get on board with this list. Studies have shown that a head massage can boost circulation to the scalp, which, as well as leaving you floating on a cloud of good feels, can actually promote hair growth (tick!). This is because as massage dilates the blood vessels on your noggin, it boosts blood flow to the hair follicles, potentially resulting in healthier, thicker strands (and eventually, more of them.) Can’t get yourself to a massage table as often as you and your hair would like? Instruct your other half to dish out some slow, circular movements around your whole head next time you’re enjoying a lazy Sunday lie-in.
- Sleep with your hair loose
Now you’ve tired yourselves out, it’s time for a nap (yep, this haircare business is hard work). Our only instruction here is to make sure your hairband is nowhere to be seen. Keeping your hair tied back while you snooze pulls at your strands, causing what’s known as traction alopecia – hair loss brought on by regular, consistent pulling at the hair roots. So, nod off to sleep with your hair out for sweet, shiny-haired dreams.
