Activated Charcoal. Worth the hype or a total bust?

In a health-crazed world, hype-words such as ‘superfood’ and ‘miracle ingredient’ are thrown around very loosely. One of these unknowing suspects, branded as a superfood, is ‘Activated Charcoal’. 

Yes, this black, ashy powder has gained some serious ‘street-cred’ in the past year or so. With a resumé that boasts countless health benefits, we thought it was about time to put this ingredient to the test. So… activated charcoal… worth the hype or total #bust?

What is Charcoal? 
Isn’t charcoal that burnt, black residue that too often appears on our morning toast after we’ve left the kitchen unaccompanied for one too many mins? In short, yes. What is activated charcoal?
In essence, activated charcoal is the exact same charcoal found in your morning toast or burnt cooking experience, with the added element of human intervention to effectively ignite and use the benefits of this material. 

Activated charcoal is created from carbon-rich materials burned at high temperatures, (according to the National Capital Poison Center). Materials that create charcoal when burned (coconut shells, wood, etc) are heated between 600 and 900 degrees Celsius to create a charcoal powder - yikes, that's hot hot hot! 

What nutrients or key factors does it contain?
Before it was used in health food or the cosmetic industry, activated charcoal has been used in medicine to remove toxins quickly from the body. For example, charcoal would be (and still is) administered to patients in hospital who have overdosed on certain drugs or been poisoned, to bring the life-threatening toxins out of the body. 

The best way to describe how AC works is to liken its effects to that of a sponge. Activated charcoal readily soaks up and absorbs unwanted toxin particles. These toxins bind to the surface of the activated charcoal so that the toxin is less likely to be absorbed into the body. 

How does this relate to health or skin?
When thinking about how activated charcoal has been used in medicine to remove poisonous toxins from one's bloodstream, it doesn’t take much of a genius to work out how it can benefit your skin. 

Many skin issues such as acne, blackheads, clogged pores and some wounds are caused (and further exaggerated) by a build-up of external, unwanted bacteria, toxins and dirt in the skin. 

Applying charcoal products to the skin, especially the face, can help (literally) draw out the matter causing these skin issues, purifying the skin and leaving a flawless complexion behind. 

Conclusion?
Although many hyped-up superfoods are just that, hyped up, activated charcoal is an exception to the rule!
