WHAT IS SCALP ACNE
Scalp acne is a form of inflammation in the hair follicle and can be caused by hormones, genetics or blocking of the follicle from product build-up. Just like your face, your scalp has pores that are vulnerable to being blocked - the main culprits being hairspray, dry shampoo and silicone-based products.
If you do have scalp acne, you should never squeeze or pop any of those blemishes - period. Just like facial acne, picking and popping scalp acne could result in infection, irritation, scarring and even lead to hair loss, so put your hands down!
HOW TO TREAT IT
The good news is that scalp acne is relatively simple to treat. If it's hormonal or genetic, you'll need to speak to a dermatologist and discuss treatment options and may need to stock up on medicated shampoos. But if your acne is from product build-up it's much easier to treat and tends to clear quickly (unless you have a severe case and then you'll need to see your dermatologist). The first step to tackling your scalp acne is to make sure you're cleansing your scalp well and with the right products. Like your face, the scalp is a very sebaceous environment, and if you're not cleaning well enough, it's more prone to breaking out.
Look for shampoos that are silicone-free and contain Peppermint like our Hair Growth Shampoo. Peppermint is soothing on the scalp, helps fight bacteria with its natural anti-fungal antibacterial properties, and silicone-free shampoos won't leave any product build-up.
If over-the-counter remedies don't work, you'll need to see your dermatologist and work out a treatment plan that usually includes prescription-strength treatments.
