Why You Need a Pre-Shampoo Treatment

Wash, rinse, repeat and you’re good to go, right? Well… hold up, girl. In fact, if you’re only washing and conditioning your hair, you might be skipping one of the most important steps in your hair care regimen.

Now, we know you’ve got places to go and Ubers waiting for you, and the thought of spending more time on maintenance might not be top of your to-do list, but listen up. These days, hair stylists and experts swear by a crucial step – the pre-shampoo treatment – in your haircare routine.

Read on for the lowdown on what exactly is a pre-shampoo treatment, how it works and why you need to pop one in your shower caddy, stat, to boost your roots and keep your locks in the best possible condition.

What is a pre-shampoo treatment?

The pre-shampoo treatment is typically an oil, balm or butter that is designed to be applied to your hair before you wet and wash it.

How do you use it?

Pop your pre-shampoo treatment on your locks as soon as you jump in the shower (or even before), while your hair is still dry. Start at your roots and work your way down to the ends, then leave it to work its magic for about 15 minutes. Use at least once a week.

What’s in it?

It’s typically formulated with hydrating ingredients to lock in moisture and keep your locks healthy as can be. Now, we can’t speak for all of the pre-shampoo treatments out there, but we can tell you that our Elixir Hair Oil is packed with natural, organic goodies that your hair loves (yep, she told us).

Think Jamaican black castor oil, which has been used for hair-boosting properties for centuries, and is rich in vitamin E, minerals, proteins, and omega 6 and 9 beneficial fatty acids; and coconut oil, which is packed with antioxidants and nutrients such as vitamin E, vitamin K and iron, and has a protective effect on dry or chemically treated locks.

Why do I need one?

Now, we don’t want to guilt-trip you, but most of us aren’t always as kind to our locks as we should be. Whether you’re semi-attached to your hair straightener, the notion of ‘air-drying’ is a foreign concept to you, you see your colourist more than you see your mum, or you’re partial to swimming laps in a chlorinated pool, chances are you have at least one lifestyle factor that causes damage to your hair on a regular basis.

Now, if you’re a regular around here, you’ll know that damaged hair is rarely lush, thick, long hair. More often it’s dry, dull or worse, thinning and breaking. Luckily though, there are fixes for that! If your locks are dry, frizzy or brittle (yep, that’s er, most of us), a pre-shampoo treatment will seriously lift your hair game.

What exactly will it do?

A good pre-shampoo treatment works by infusing a luxurious combination of deeply hydrating ingredients into your strands. It’ll serve to lock in moisture and strengthen the hair shaft before you wash it so that your hair will be left strong, shiny and soft as a puppy’s ear. Yes, please!

I use your anti dandruff shampoo om my nearly 11 year old daughter because hers was so bad. Seems to be working really well. Her hair is super thick (Im a hairdresser & do thin it out regularly) so would the pre shampoo treatement do anything for her?
