If you’ve got an itch that you just can’t seem to ditch, this blog post is for you! An itchy scalp is annoying at the best of times. Even just thinking about it gives us the shakes. But when you’ve scratched that scalp one too many times for it to be considered more than just a common itch, it may be time to look a little closer into the root issue (pun intended) of your hairy situation. #Boostbabes, it’s time to sort out that scalp of yours and help you live an itch-free life, let’s go!
First of all, why do we itch?
It may seem like a pretty strange question to ask, but to determine whether your itch calls for further intervention, we need to understand why the body ‘itches’ in the first place. The body uses ‘itching’ as a response to foreign/unwanted allergens or substances touching the skin. At its core, an itch is the irritation of skin/nerve cells associated with the skin.
What causes an itchy scalp?
Itchy scalps can be caused for multiple reasons, some more serious than others. Less serious causes of an itchy scalp can include dirty hair, pollution, environmental changes, allergies and nits (mainly in children but they don’t discriminate; adults can totally contract nits too!)
More severe conditions contributing to an itchy scalp revolve around inflammatory skin conditions. These conditions include dandruff, dermatitis and psoriasis. These bad boys are the types of itch you definitely don’t want on your head, with some (dermatitis and psoriasis) needing medical intervention to cure.
Lucky for many people, the most common ‘serious’ itchy scalp issue is dandruff; which doesn’t (for the most part) require medical attention.
What is dandruff?
Dandruff is a skin issue that affects the scalp. The most common form of this condition causes a dry, itchy scalp that produces small, white, scale-like particles of dead skin to come away from the scalp and scatter through your hair like a tiny colony of ants #EEEK!
Causes of dandruff:
Like most skin conditions, there is a range of reasons why anyone could be affected by dandruff. The top five causes of dandruff in adults are:
- Irritated, oily skin.
- Not shampooing enough.
- Dry skin.
- Sensitivity to hair care products (contact dermatitis).
- Other skin conditions, such as psoriasis and eczema.
How to treat?
There are many different ways to treat dandruff however, the most effective form (in our opinion) is through the hair care products you use to clean your hair and scalp. By choosing to use anti-dandruff specific products, you’ll not only clean your head but target flakes and scalp irritation.
Be careful with the type of anti-dandruff products you invest in though. Many conventional supermarket brands use harsh chemicals that, while effective at removing flakes, also strip hair dry of all its natural oils. This leads to an even more dehydrated scalp (the leading cause of dandruff), and thus the nasty dandruff cycle returns.
Key ingredients to look out for in anti-dandruff products are Aloe Vera, Zinc Pyrithione and natural oils. Zinc Pyrithione has fungistatic and bacteriostatic properties, making it second to none for a more ‘natural’ approach when treating dandruff. However, tackling dandruff is more than just removing flakes.
If you want to heal your itchy scalp completely, you need to look at the root cause of dandruff; This being your dry, inflamed scalp. This is where the ‘miracle’ ingredients like aloe vera and natural essential oils come in.
Aloe Vera and natural oils, like peppermint, sandalwood and jojoba, are readily absorbed by the scalp and are incredibly useful in reducing skin inflammation. With a hydrated, nourished scalp, your head is less likely to become inflamed and produce dandruff #winwin!
