You Might Be Washing Your Hair The Wrong Way

Doing it wrong can lead to loads of issues. Watch your hair totally turn around!

Washing your hair is like haircare 101, but it’s actually a step we can get seriously wrong, without even realising it. The basics are always the most important to get right, but while we learn to wash our hair as little kids, we rarely revisit the whole thing as adults.

Well, now is the time to check in on that! Are you definitely washing your hair the right way? Is washing it the wrong way creating hair issues you actually shouldn’t have to deal with? Erm, yep to that last one! Washing your hair wrong can lead to heaps of dramas like an irritated scalp, dandruff, and greasy roots, all the way through to dryness and damaged lengths. Yeugh!

So! Let’s talk about washing our hair the right way, and get those hair probs sorted.

Step 1: Prep

Washing your hair correctly starts with prep. First, brush your lengths to detangle knots and remove product buildup. This not only prevents breakage later on but also ensures an even clean. Use a wide-tooth comb or a brush with soft bristles, and go sloooow.

If you tend to use loads of product or find you have roots that get greasy fast, you might want to factor in a pre-shampoo step like our Scalp Salt Scrub once a week. This’ll really deep clean your scalp. If your lengths tend toward dryness, our Elixir Hair Oil is the perfect fit for boosting strength and nourishment.

Step 2: Check The Temp

Love a super hot shower? You might wanna rethink that. Hot water can dry out strands super fast, leading to breakage. Instead, go for a lukewarm temp if you can – it’ll open up the hair cuticle just enough to allow your shampoo and conditioner to work their magic, without stripping strands of essential oils. Psst… it’s also great for your skin, too.

Step 3: Use The Right Amount Of Shampoo

For shampoo, you want a quarter-sized amount – a little more if you have long, thick hair. Blend it in your palms before applying directly to the roots, and focus on your scalp, giving it a big scrub and massage using circular motions.  This helps stimulate blood flow, promoting healthy hair growth. Shampoo will naturally flow down the lengths as you wash, but if you feel like your ends have some product build-up, gently massaging the shampoo through is a good idea. Just don’t scrub your lengths! That’s a one-way ticket to tangles and split ends.

Step 4: Rinse and Repeat If You Need

If you feel you need a second round of shampoo, go for it – just rinse the first round out completely before you dive back in. Those with long, thick hair or oily roots may prefer a second shampoo to really deep cleanse, but the key here is be gentle and focus on the roots for your second clean.

Step 5: Apply Conditioner To Damp, Not Soaked Hair

Before applying conditioner, squeeze excess water out of your freshly rinsed hair! This helps conditioner soak into the follicle, instead of just slipping off in the water. One to two quarter-sized amounts of conditioner should give you the nourishment you need, without overloading strands. Focus on the mid-lengths and ends for this one, as that’s where your hair needs the most moisture – but massage a little into your roots to nourish your scalp, too, especially when you’re using our products – they’re designed to nurture your scalp and strands. Before you rinse, let the conditioner soak in for a few minutes, so it can really get to work!

Step 6: Rinse Cool

If you can hack it, use cool water for your conditioner rinse. This helps seal the cuticles, locking in that moisture and leaving your hair wayyyy shiny. If you can’t handle the chill, a lukewarm rinse will still help to seal the cuticle! Basically, as cold as you can handle.

Step 7: Go Gentle With Towel Drying

Washing your hair correctly doesn’t end in the shower. After squeezing excess water from strands, use a microfibre towel like our Quickie Hair Turban to gently pat dry your lengths, then absorb water as it holds your hair off your face. Whatever you do, don’t rub your hair dry! This leads to frizz, breakage and split ends.

Keep the hair protection going by using our Heat Protect Spray when styling, and if you’re prone to dry strands, apply a nourishing serum like our Heavenly Hydration Serum!
