What’s The Deal With Parabens And Sulfates? Why We Don’t Use Them In Our Products

If you’re interested in beauty, especially haircare, you’ve defs seen terms like “paraben-free” and “sulfate-free” around. You’ve likely seen them on our own packaging, actually. That’s because we’re firmly committed to avoiding these two ingredients because we’re not a fan of what they can do to skin and hair.

Maybe you’re a bit confused about why brands like ours keep these ingredients out of our products. That’s why we’ve put together an explainer for you.

What Are Parabens?

Parabens are basically a bunch of synthetic chemicals often used as preservatives in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and some food products – and haircare. They help prevent the growth of stuff like bacteria, mould, and yeast, so products can have an extended shelf life.

What Are Sulfates?

Sulfates are included in haircare as cleaning agents, with the two most common being sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES). They create the lather in hair care, and help to remove dirt, oil, and product buildup from the hair and scalp.

Why Are Sulfate And Paraben-Free Haircare Products Good?

Well, while regulatory agencies like the FDA and the European Commission's Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) have concluded that the current scientific evidence doesn’t support a direct link between parabens used in haircare products and adverse health effects when used at typical concentrations, there is still some debate around whether parabens can be harmful to humans. Sulfates, meanwhile, have been known to irritate sensitive skin types and dry out hair.

Choosing sulfate and paraben-free haircare like Bondi Boost means you’re less likely to develop scalp or skin irritation from your hair products, plus heaps of other benefits. For example, sulfate-free haircare won’t prematurely strip colour from hair, and it’s excellent for keeping natural oils at optimum levels so your strands don’t get dry and brittle.

Why Does Bondi Boost Avoid Sulfates And Parabens

Well, we just think haircare is way better without them. Everyone wants post-wash hair that feels soft, clean, and healthy, and we have nailed the brief without needing sulfates or parabens in the mix. This makes our products more accessible for people with sensitive skin and scalps and perfect for people with coloured hair. We’re also committed to all-natural formulations, so we’ve come up with nifty ways to bypass these two ingredients and still get you the results you’re after.
